Flow | Meditations

Overview

This series came about after prolonged periods of deep meditation. As understanding of the subconscious deepened, it was easier to create the tools of parameterization and hand them over to its whims than to pretend that I had any artistic control.

That which exerts its forces of expansion and contraction on my conscious mind via feelings, dreams, and compulsions is represented here as an ocean of digital waves. A tangled grid of thousands of particles, driven by divergence-free vector fields, reveals flow in many ways — turbulent, circular, converging, diverging, rising, waning or a mix of any of these. The resulting forms are reminiscent of patterns found in nature — from animal fur and bird feathers to oceans and wind currents.

I invite the viewer to breathe as their eyes move with the waves, to let go with every out-breath, so a new kind of flow can emerge with the next in-breath.

This work was created entirely using Javascript and ThreeJS. A fluid simulation was created with instanced geometry allowing for hundreds of thousands of particles to be animated smoothly in real-time.

Flow | Meditations was shown at the India Art Fair in New Delhi from February 9-12, 2023.
